The Trend I've decided on...

The trend I've decided to do is turtle neck/rolled up neck jumpers because the concept I'm going with is all about being sophisticated and chic. I've decided to use a male model as I want the photo shoot to look manly and stylish. One of the reasons why I've decided to do this trend is because I think the turtle neck is over looked and so many different outfits can be put together using the turtle neck jumpers, either under shirts, with suits, cardigans or simply on their own tucked into trousers or for a modern more stylish, sleek look dark skinny jeans.

The magazine I've decided to do my shoot concept on is Elle as my first choice was going to be Vogue but I wanted my shoot to be more for the middle class so everyone could get this look on the high street and not have to pay loads of money to proof a point about you don't have to spend loads of money to look stylish.

If I could have picked any magazine to do my photo shoot for I think I would have picked Instyle because I know Instyle is all about giving people tips and helping them create the looks.

Cashmere Jumper - Male Trend

Cashmere jumpers are elegant, timeless and very versatile. Perfect for a smart, classy look on it's own or for an evening outfit, wear underneath a blazer and over the top of a shirt and tie. Personally I like how simple the cashmere jumper is and how for a smart look you could have a white or black shirt underneath with a blazer or for a more funky look try a bright or printed shirt under the jumper and a tweed or leather jacket over the top for a more casual yet stylish look.

The roll-neck (turtle jumper) - Male Trend

Timeless, versatile and effortlessly stylish, the roll neck jumper is the perfect knitwear option for the A/W.
It’s ideal for creating interesting, layered outfits, use underneath a blazer for a more smart, chic look or beneath a classic blouson jacket for an on trend, casual feel. For a slightly alternative, new way to wear the roll neck is under a shirt, as well as a jacket/blazer. It was the go-to look on the A/W 2013 runway at RAKE.

Key colours are Buddhist oranges, winter whites and concrete greys – as seen on the catwalks of E. Tautz and Topman Design. Or for a more serious, masculine look, a solid black roll-neck is classic and timeless and can really show you mean business whilst looking edgy. There are two main styles be concerned with this season: lightweight and heavy gauge.

Lightweight versions often come in cotton or merino wool and are best used as layering pieces due to their breath-ability. Heavier wool blends, on the other hand, offer a cosy, tactile appeal and look great dressed down with jeans at the weekend for a more casual look.

Graphic Knitwear - Male Trend

Moving on from colour, graphic statement knits are set to become a key piece within menswear this season. With a wide range of patterns – from colour-blocking and paneling to stripes and geometric shapes – rather than traditional graphic images (like you would find on tees) being applied to knitwear.

Marni and Jil Sander were just two designers who showcased on point graphic knits within their AW13 collections. In particular, the crossed sashes at Jil Sander and the cut and sew panels at Marni were extremely wearable.

The great thing about graphic knitwear is that it’s able to create a real statement of intent when worn as a top layer and could look really chic when having a turtle neck cotton jumper underneath the jumper.

Coloured knitwear - Male Trend

Key hues this season are autumnal shades of burgundy and emerald green, whilst cobalt blue and orange continue to be major colour trends across the board. If wanting to stand out from the crowd then yellow or red; they can be easily dull downed and anchored with a trusty navy blazer and a neutral pair of chinos/trousers or even black skinny jeans.

What I've decided...

I've decided that I'm going to do a trend for a guy because I want to do a chic, sophisticated trend and think picking a guy trend would be good and different but also more of a challenge. So I'm going to look into a few different trends for A/W 2013 for men and get a few images together before I pick my final trend.

Donna Karan

Donna Karen A/W collection 2013 is a true example of how turtle neck clothing can be creative and really complete the outfit going from a body con-dress going right to the jawline to make it look edgy but also sexy. I also like how Donna Karen doesn't just use the usual fabric (wool or cotton) for turtleneck clothing, she's created an outfit with a velvet turtleneck collar which gives it a vampire, sexy look but still looking sleek and classy at the same time.

A/W 2013 - Turtlenecks

After looking at a few different trends I came across the Turtleneck trend which personally I think gets over looked and people don't realise how much wearing a turtleneck jumper can change an outfit from wearing it under a jumper to create a more chic, grown up look or having it under a suit for a mature look whilst still looking edgy. One of the reasons why I like the Turtleneck trend so much is because it can be worn by both gender and on the catwalk you see both male and female collections using turtleneck to complete the outfit. Two of the main turtleneck types I've seen the most off are chunky knitted turtlenecks which gives more of a casual, playfulness vibe or there's the cotton turtleneck jumper which is more for creating a chic, sleek style look. This A/W I've seen so many designers use Turtleneck under dresses, coats, suits, cardigans, pretty much under anything you could think off or simply you can just wear a turtleneck jumper on it's own. Another thing I like about this trend is that it's really affordable and many high street stores have started selling all different types of turtleneck jumpers such as Topshop/Topman, Primark etc.

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera uses two black turtle neck jumpers in her A/W 2013 collection to create more of a grown up vibe. I really like how she had just a plain black turtle neck jumper tucked into a bold skirt which just makes the outfit look chic and using the turtle neck jumper just makes the outfit look sleek and shows the main focus of the outfit is the skirt.
Victoria Beckham

Out of all the collections so far I've looked at, Victoria Beckham A/W 2013 has to be on of the most polished, sophisticated but also just simply 'cool' collections that represent winter patterns using a wide range of different patterns and fabrics such as windowpane-checked flannels, subtle tweeds, felted wools and Scottish cashmere, cut into cozy warm coats, sharp cut shift dresses and shin-length skirts. The hair and make-up is just simply basic with the look of just brushing the hair and putting it in a pony-tail and the make-up just a bit of contouring and a tiny hint of blush.

Thakoon

Thakoon A/W collection was all about 'longing for winter' and still used summer hues in his collection, however, he managed to use winter top patterns and one of the patterns he used was leopard print and also adding bits of checked detailing in parts of the dresses. He kept the models hair style short and and influences from sci-fi to create the cut to create a more modern look but still looking sexy to match his collection.

A/W 2013 - Classic Patterns

After a crazy summer and spring collections from designers showing bold, bright patterns on the catwalk, designers were ready to go back to the basic. Leopard, plaid, and pinstripes all made appearances on the runway, but laundry looking plaid was a pattern which caught a lot of attention because it still brought a fun vibe to winter fashion. This trend would have to be one of the most populist trends this A/W as so many designers have brought out something related to this trend, it doesn't necessarily have to be the whole outfit covered in one of the latest patterns but maybe it's just the collar or just the shoes to add a bit more playfulness to the outfit.

Rag & Bone

What I like about Rag and Bone 2013 A/W collection is the mix and match designs and how they've layered clothing over clothing. I also like how they've used a lot of different materials with the patterns in their A/W collection. Another thing I like about Rag and Bone 2013 collection is how it has a chic, grunge look to it and the patterns are either dark colours such a vampire red, muddy greys etc or you have quite bright colours which complement each other but still clash when over layering. For their collection they've kept the hair and make-up simple and natural with the hair pinned to one side and very subtle make-up so it doesn't take the attention away from the patterns on the clothes.
Tommy Hilfiger

I really like how Tommy Hilfiger in his A/W 2013 collection has mixed the white trend with a different trend which is all about masculine dressing and the 'boyfriend' look. I think mixing the the two trends gives it a new edge and sharpness but also because the main colour is white and isn't harsh dark colours it still looks soft at the same time.

Proenza Schouler

When it comes to Proenza Schouler, he's kept to the white trend but added tiny bits of black to create more of a contrast between the two colours. Another thing I like about Proenza Schouler collection is that he's turtle neck collar underneath the clothes which just completes the outfit and makes it more sophisticated but gives the sense of the outfit being timeless and classy. I think when it comes to doing this trend what works the best is having the outfit long which means a long pencil skirt, or a long big coat to add structure and shape to give it that quirky look.

A/W 2013 - White! White! White!

One of the strongest impressions on the runway this A/W was head to toe covered in white, which I love. I think it's nice to see fashion go back to the basics and I personally think creating a look which is completely made up of white is chic and modern and it's nice to see a trend which is simple but also effective when it comes to standing out from the crowd. I also like how this trend is easy to assemble at any price and easy to wear.

Derek Lam

What I really like about Derek Lam A/W 2013 collection are these two complete white outfits which show the 'all in white' trend off so well. I think because the trend is all about one colour a good way to make it unique is by having different textures. I like how Derek Lam hasn't gone over bored with the textures but just kept it minimalistic by adding a bit of over-layering the fabric near the collar to add some detail to the outfits.

Celine

I really like part of the navy blue collection from Celine and  how she kept  it simple and just stuck with the basics and didn't make the outfits over complex and everything is classy. With the two images above and most of her A/W 2013 collection the whole outfit just flows and looks soft but keeps it edgy but adding parts of the outfit with structured cuts of the material to create harsh angles.

Chloe

When it comes to the Chloe A/W 2013 collection the use of Navy Blue is mixed with lighter blues to create more shapes to the outfit and helps create a block colour look. I also like how all 3 images of chosen from the collection have high neckline collars and the first one has a turtle neckline which creates a more smart, edgy look.

A/W 2013 - Navy Blue

Dark, intense and classic, next season navy blue is the new black. Made famous by the British Royal Navy, the dark blue adapted itself into the world of fashion and appears as winter's standout color. Perfectlly goes so well with the other season’s favourites - black, burgundy and pops of purple.

Dries Van Noten

I really like these two navy blue outfit's because of the use of different materials and texture which is also another big trend this year which is using different textures. I think keeping it all navy blue makes it a lot more chic and smart looking but still keeping it sophisticated and feminine. Using navy blue for the full outfit can easily make the outfit masculine and navy blue is normally known in the fashion world when it comes to ‘power dressing’ as it’s a harsh colour which gives more of a serious atmosphere, however adding texture to the outfit's like Dires Van Noten has done makes it look a lot more softer and more playful.

The Start!

Before picking a trend the first thing I decided to do is research different trends which are already out there for this A/W 2013. I've decided I'm going to research both male and female trends because at the moment I'm not sure if I want to do a female trend or a male trend. As well as looking at different fashion trends I'm also going to look into make-up and hair trends because there's no point in looking at fashion trends and not having make-up or the hair on trend with the rest of the trend concepts.

After looking at different trends I will then decide what trend I want to do my concepts on. I’ll pick the trend which seems the most interesting and one that I’d be interesting finding out more about how I could create the looks. I will also pick a magazine in which my photo shoot would be put in depending on the trend and how I want to plan my photo shoots.
